Support with a difference

Mentoring is a weekly. one-on-one relationship. It aims to support a young person who may be navigating challenges or wanting to explore new opportunities. At its core, mentoring is about building a trusting relationship that focuses on the mentee’s personal, academic, or professional development.

It’s not about solving their problems for them, but rather empowering them to make confident decisions, overcome obstacles and grow.

All our volunteer mentors undergo comprehensive training including safeguarding, and ongoing support from our mentoring coordinator.

The impact of a good mentor can last a lifetime, helping young people become empowered, self-assured adults.

Why is mentoring so valuable for young people?

  • It builds confidence and promotes resilience.
  • It creates a safe space for questions and self-reflection
  • It provides access to life experience and career advice
  • It encourages independent thinking and personal responsibility.

How does it work?

  • Regular meetings: Mentors meet with their mentees regularly, typically once a week for one hour. This consistency helps establish a supportive and reliable relationship. The process usually spans six months to one year, allowing time for trust to build and progress to unfold.
  • Goal setting: Mentors help the young person define clear, achievable goals, whether they’re related to education, career aspirations, or personal development. These goals guide the focus of your conversations and actions.
  • Guidance and encouragement: A mentor is a sounding board and a coach. They listen, provide perspective, and encourage their mentee to think through challenges, set realistic steps, and stay motivated.
  • Skill-building and connections: Mentors may help their mentees develop specific skills, like problem-solving, communication, or even practical job skills. This hands-on learning experience boosts the mentee’s confidence and readiness for the future.
